Movie Night: Watchmen

I know everyone saw this a long time ago, but (as I have explained before) we don't get to the movies too often. The last film I watched in the cinema was "300." Going way back, I remember the first film I saw in public. It was "Lady and the Tramp." I was six. Two years later I saw "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Yes, I don't get to the theater often at all.

Watchmen was a fantastic film. The writing was good, the acting was top notch and the soundtrack was spot on. The only thing I can really fault it for is length. It doesn't really feel long, but it is. Not much of a criticism, I know, but I had to pause that thing and get up and walk around to make sure I still had the use of my legs. Oh, and Kristina thought the sex scene was too long.

I'll agree with most folks and say that Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) really stands out. His performance is horripilating. We Burgerses are looking forward to his Freddy in the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

I haven't read the comic yet. Been meaning to, but between diapers, dinner and Derdriu I seem to have my day pretty well packed. At least we own the DVD now, so I can watch it again some night when I want some comic book excellence. Both Burgerses give it a thumbs ups! Good job, Watchmen!

EDIT: To clarify, Derdriu is not my mistress. She is my World of Warcraft character. She is a level 80 dwarf priest and she looks like a grandma. Just to be clear.

Patch Day: Warcraft -vs- Warhammer at End Game

I can't pretend to know anything about vanilla or BC end game in WoW (got to 60 during BC and hit 70 WotLK). From what I understand, they were scary places to be, filled with constant raid calendar events and 50 DKP minuses. Things seem different with WotLK.

Derdriu did finally get to level 80 and now she's enjoying bits of what that entails. I switched professions back to engineering. That seems a pretty common thing to do and it sure keeps a dwarf occupied collecting ore all over Azeroth. When that gets boring, I've got the priest PvP set to collect. So far I have the gloves! When that gets boring? Well, there's reputation to grind for various rewards and don't forget world events and other achievement unlocks.

Warhammer was is many ways a better game than WoW, but when I got to PvE end game I was stuck at the stinky end of a never-ending PvP (sorry, RvR) grind that meant lots of raids. It was easy to get into the action in Warhammer and between RvR and dungeons I had most of the lesser ward and greater ward sets. The sad thing was, that was all there was. Sure, Warhammer had a VERY detailed achievement system that I could have explored, but WoW stole that just like it'll steal from every game that stole from it until it's got every cool feature its mean old-graphics self can handle.

A totally late and useless review of Juno on DVD

When we started having babies we decided we weren't going to be the parents who bring babies into movies. It's never a good idea, I don't care how sweet your baby is. Our babies are plenty sweet. No. We won't do it. So, we see all the movies when they pop up on our Netflix list. This means, sadly, that our opinions on such films are laughable and ignorable. It's like that Jim Gaffigan routine where he talks about watching Heat for the first time, but he isn't able to chat about it because no one cares anymore. *sigh*

Anyway, tonight we watched Juno. It's a good movie. The writing is decent, the performances are top notch and the story is heart-warming and all that. Our one beef? The music. Mostly it was fine, I guess. There were songs that were listen-able here and there and mostly they didn't detract from the scenes. Juno's labor scene is the HUGE exception. The weird, indie-whatever playing there is distractingly terrible.

Sure, that's my opinion. And if you like the music, more power to you. I just think it was a bad decision, kind of like they way they did the soundtrack to the animated Transformers movie in the '80s. Don't be surprised in 10 years when you dust off your BluRay collection and pop Juno in, only to find the soundtrack weirdly jarring and dated.

Juno likes Iggy. What would have been wrong with some Stooges? Punk would have worked great for this film. Strongbad has the right idea, anyway. But what can you do?

To get too hung up on the music would be nitpicking. We still loved the film. Two thumbs up! Good job, Juno people!
